About Greece

Greece lies at the southeastern edge of Europe. The country shares land borders to the north with Albania, FYROM, and Bulgaria and to the east with Turkey. Though a relatively small country, Greece boasts an astonishing variety of landscapes: from the legendary mountains of Olympus, Pindos and Parnassos to miles of pristine coastline. With well over a hundred inhabited islands and a territory that stretches from the south Aegean to the Balkan countries, Greece offers enough to fill months of travel. Indeed its coastline is the mostly extensive among all the Mediterranean countries with amazing beaches and marvellous sea.

Modern Greece traces its roots to the civilization of ancient Greece, generally considered to be the cradle of western civilization as well as the birth place of western philosophy, literature, theatre, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles. Greece is gifted with a rich and fascinating cultural heritage and a visit of its archeological sites is an amazing travel experience through mythology and history, among Gods and heroes.

Greece is divided into ten regions of which Macedonia is the largest. The highest Greek mountain is Mount Olympus (2,917 m.), believed to be the seat of the 12 Gods of ancient Greek mythology. The largest city and capital is Athens, with a population of over 4m. Piraeus is the main port. The second largest city, Thessaloniki, with a population of nearly 1m, is an important seaport functioning as the gateway to the Balkans and a major economic and cultural centre for the whole of northern Greece.

The climate is Mediterranean. Summers are hot and dry, winters usually mild though during the winter it snows in the mountains and in the north. Most of the rain falls in autumn and winter.

Greek time is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, an hour ahead of Central European. Along with the rest of continental Europe, the clock is forwarded one hour during summer -from the end of March to the end of September.
