Agios Nikolaos

Review of Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos
Distance from Thessaloniki 110 km.

The village of Agios Nikolaos was formerly known by the name Fourni and was founded before the 14 th century a little further to the east than it is located today. Remarkable prehistoric and ancient settlements have been discovered in the surrounding area. A very important prehistoric settlement, which existed until the Hellenistic Time, has been discovered on the hill named Vetryno, right at the beginning of the Sithonia peninsula, between Agios Nikolaos and Nikiti. From this hill the visitor can enjoy an excellent view of the two Gulfs, which surround Sithonia, Toroneos and Siggitikos and a panorama of Vourvourou with the numerous capes, peninsulas and little islands. On the northeastern side of the village, the location called Pyrgi (towers), is the location where the ancient town Siggos was built. The monastery dedicated to Agios Nikolaos (St Nicolas) Chrysokamaros, which belonged to the Monastery Xenophontos, was also here in the 14 th century. The area was named after the tower of this monastery and the village was named after the monastery as well.

It is one of the most beautiful old villages of Halkidiki full of old, well made and well preserved houses. The old inhabitants were great craftsmen of the stone (they had built many buildings and churches on Mount Athos as well). The village is also known as “maniatohori”, since the first inhabitants, during the years of the Turkish Occupation, were refugees from Mani in the Peloponnese.
