Ammouliani

Review of Ammouliani

Ammouliani Island really belongs to the miracles of nature: such a small island of only 6 km length, which comprises so many sandy beaches, all of them famous for the clarity of their waters. Just how crystal-like are these waters of the sea in Ammouliani is not reflected fairly even in the photos, not even in the ‘’blue flags’’ which have been awarded to all its beaches. It is proven by the numbers of the visitors. In reality, every summer, the 600 permanent inhabitants welcome 6000 visitors so as to offer them the home-made island hospitality, to embrace them in a warm way. Visit Ammouliani on every occasion! Don’t miss swimming in Alikes Beach, the most photographed and loved beach, enjoy the peace of Karagatsi Beach, offer yourself the affordable luxury of your daily swimming in Agios Giorgos and in Megali Ammos Beach, take the tour of the island by renting a boat (license is not necessary) and enjoy fishing in the abrupt northern beaches. In Ammouliani you will eat the freshest fish you have ever tried! The island disposes of a big fishing fleet (the second largest in Central Makedonia) and thus the locals believe that ‘’the yesterday fish is not considered fresh’’. Don’t forget to visit the Folklore Museum in the centre of the island: the homelands and Proikonisos come to life before your eyes, since as exhibits you will see the belongings that the refugees brought with them with so much love from their homes. Even the Epitaph that some people preferred to carry instead of their own essentials reveals the piety, humility and the faith of those people martyred. How to get there: Reaching Ammouliani is much easier than you can imagine. Boats, ferry boats and regular buses make the transportation from and to the island a matter of just couple of minutes, the distance of just a few km which separates the island from the area of Mt.Athos allows a very frequent connectivity. Once the summer season starts, namely from the beginning of June the ferry boats go every one hour and during July and August they are much more frequent, every half an hour. The ticket is 2 euro per person and the rate for the vehicles amounts to 10 euro. Larger vehicles pay a larger fee. Throughout the summer period also the municipal speedboat operate additional trips mainly after 8 pm, while during peak months they still make regular trips even during the night (23.00, 01.00, 03.00, 05.00).
