Review of Nikiti
Nikiti
Distance from Thessaloniki 100 km.
It is a coastal settlement, right at the beginning of the Sithonia peninsula, in an area full of ancient locations. In the area, during antiquity, was the ancient town Galipsos, mentioned by Herodotus, who mentions it when describing the route of the Persian fleet in 480 BC. Herodotus describes Nikiti's location between Toroni and the ancient town Sermyli (Ormylia). The town became member of the first Athenian Alliance, but rose against it in 431 BC.
In the area were two more ancient towns, Physkella and Parthenopolis. According to the legend, Parthenopolis was built by Grastos, son of Mygdonas. Many assume that the village Parthenonas , near Ν. Μarmaras was named after Parthenopolis.
The ancient Galipsos was on the little bay, near the location named Kastri. Later, at the end of the Hellenistic Time, a new settlement was founded in the area of Agios Georgios (St. George), which developed mainly during the Christian time (6 th century). Physkella was, during the same time, in the area of Elia. Remainders of these settlements are the three early Christian temples dedicated to Agios Georgios (St George) and Agios Sophronios (St Sophronios) in the area of Agios Georgios (St George) and a third one in the area of Elia, which is unknown to us to which Saint it was dedicated to. The Huns destroyed these temples probably during the 6th century.
In the beginning of the 14 th century, the biggest part of the village's surrounding area belonged to Monasteries in Mount Athos (Lavra, Xiropotamou and Xenophontos ). There was also an independent village, Psallida, which was destroyed in the beginning of the century by the Catalans. Simultaneously, higher in the hills, another village was founded by the workers of the Neakitou monastery property. Probably this property gave its name to the village of Nikiti . In 1821 Nikiti suffered and the inhabitants left seeking for shelter in the North Sporades islands and elsewhere. Gradually, though, they returned and rebuilt the village.
The village today is divided in two settlements: the modern, coastal settlement and the old village, on the upper side of the main road. The old village is well preserved at its traditional morphology by the house owners, who maintain their old houses in a very good condition. It is worth walking around the beautiful, stone-built houses with the porches and wooden balconies, the narrow stone paved alleys with the climbing vines and flowers.
In the area of Nikiti there are also other smaller settlements such as Agios Athanassios (St Athanassios), Agios Ioannis (St John), Agios Pavlos (Paul the Apostle), Askamnia, Elia, Kalogria, Kastamoniti, Kasteli, Kastri, Katsaris, Kosma Pigadi, Koviou, Lagomandra, Lithiri, Mathesi, Kalyva, Makria Langada, Pitsaka, Spathies, Hiliadou.
It is worth mentioning that Nikiti is the biggest honey-producing centre in Greece.
Wide, sandy beach, in front of the homonymous village. It has restaurants, taverns, bars and facilities for water sports.
Here is the finish line of the Toroneos cross-channel swimming contest.
